What do the category names mean?

The channel list in your IPTV app contains hundreds of categories with names like SE – PLAY+ PPV, SWEDEN HD/RAW and 24/7 HD/4K. The names come from how the content is delivered, not from how you search for it — which makes them hard to guess.

This page translates them.

The country code comes first

Every category starts with a country code telling you which market the content comes from:

CodeMarket
SESweden
NONorway
DKDenmark
FIFinland
UKUnited Kingdom
DEGermany

So if you're looking for Swedish channels, start with SE.

Provider names

Many categories are named after the service the content comes from. Some are called something other than you might expect:

PLAY+Telia Play
VIAPLAYViaplay
TV4 PLAYTV4 Play
MAXHBO Max
DISNEY+Disney+
SVT PLAYSVT Play
AFTONBLADETSportbladet
EXPRESSENSport Expressen
DAZNDAZN

Tips

The most common mix-up is PLAY+, which is Telia Play. If you're looking for something you know sits with Telia, that's the category to open.

Other markets follow the same pattern — the category is named after the service. British categories carry names like Sky, TNT Sport, BBC iPlayer and NOW TV; German ones carry RTL+, WOW and Magenta.

The PPV marking

Many sports categories end in PPV. The name comes from the industry and means pay-per-view, but at uPlay they cost nothing extra.

PPV categories contain channels opened for a single event — a match, a race, a fight night. The channel takes the event's name and start time directly in the channel name, for example NEXT HV71 - FRÖLUNDA HC Thu 13 Aug 17:55 CEST. NEXT means it hasn't started yet. CEST is Swedish summer time; if it says GMT or UTC, add one hour (winter) or two (summer) to get Swedish time. The VIP categories show the teams and time instead, for example Valur @ Aug 13 6:30 PM, with no time zone. The names come from the source and we can't change them.

Between events the channels stay in the list with names like NO EVENT STREAMING, so a PPV category shouldn't disappear. Refresh your playlist shortly before the start, and the channel will have the right name.

Quality and format

MarkingMeaning
SDStandard definition
HD1280 × 720
Full HD / FHD1920 × 1080
4K / UHD3840 × 2160
RAWMinimal reprocessing, closest to the source
HEVCH.265 — less bandwidth, higher device requirements
60fps60 frames per second, smoother motion
Dolby AudioMultichannel audio

RAW and HEVC are opposite trade-offs and deserve their own explanation — see RAW vs. HD/4K. Resolutions are covered in What is HD, Full HD and 4K?.

24/7 categories

Categories marked 24/7 contain channels that broadcast the same series or genre in a continuous loop, around the clock. You drop in mid-way, exactly as with ordinary TV — there is no start or stop time.

They are usually named something like 24/7 Drama or 24/7 Comedy, and are meant for when you want something on in the background without picking a title. Most come from the US, the UK and Germany and rarely have Swedish subtitles – you'll find Swedish series in the movie and series library.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the same channel in several categories?

So you can pick the variant that suits your connection and device. The same channel may exist as RAW, standard and HEVC. See RAW vs. HD/4K.

Do PPV channels cost extra?

No. Everything is included in your subscription. PPV is simply an industry term for channels opened per event.

I can't find the category I'm looking for

The category list is long. Use the app's search function and search for the provider's name — for example Viaplay or TV4 — instead of scrolling.

The category exists but is empty, or has disappeared

When no event is running, the PPV channels show as NO EVENT STREAMING – refresh your playlist closer to the start. If the category has disappeared completely: refresh your playlist, check that it isn't among the app's hidden groups, and that the country is included in your content under Manage → Content on My uPlay.

What's the difference between, say, TV4 PLAY PPV and TV4 PLAY PPV VIP?

The VIP categories show largely the same events as the ordinary category, from a different source and with different naming. If a channel works less well in one, try the same match in the other.

What do VIP, ULTRA, GOLD and Super mean?

They are the supplier's own labels, and we have no further explanation of them. The same event is often in several of them – if one works less well, try another.

The channel page on uplay.se doesn't show the same as my list

The channel page shows the standard line-up. If you have chosen your own countries or a package, your list may contain more or something different. The search box on the channel page only searches what you're seeing right now. To find a single channel: tap Watch now on My uPlay and search there – the search covers your whole account.

Can't find the answer?

Ask in the chat on My uPlay which channel or match you're looking for, and we'll look up where it is.
